Detailed Itinerary for 5 Days Okavango Delta Fly-In Safari
Day 1: Pickup and Fly to South Central Okavango Delta
Pickup upon your arrival at Maun airport. Please make your way to the Moremi Air Office, where a representative will meet you and provide you with your flight itinerary. After receiving your tickets, board a light aircraft to the Okavango Delta – your new home for the next two nights. The luxury camping grounds, which are located deep in the African wilderness, is completely remote and only accessible by plane.
On arrival at the private airstrip on Ntswi Island, you will be met by welcoming hosts and shown to the campsite. The campground is comprised of fully furnished, deluxe Meru tents that have been designed to blend naturally with the surrounding environment. Tents are discretely set within the densely treed island, ensuring privacy and tranquility. The accommodation has also been furnished with an eclectic mix of solid wood and African furniture and private veranda overlooking the delta floodplains. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot a whole range of wildlife passing through the plains during your stay.
Each tent contains an en-suite bathroom and outside private shower. The accommodation area is connected to the main camp via raised wooden walkways crossing the wetland, which is lit at night with fairy lanterns to create a magical ambience. The main camp contains an elevated bar, lounge and dining room, campfire boma and a swimming pool. Water activities and game walks are seasonal and water level dependent. Day 2: Game Viewing in South Central Okavango
Today there’s a variety of activities to choose from while exploring the Okavango Delta. Perhaps drive past the papyrus-clad banks of the delta in a traditional canoe as part of a Mokoro excursion, or set out on foot with an experienced guide and view wildlife in Moremi Game Reserve. There’ll be a delicious picnic lunch provided for full day trips from the campgrounds.
In the evening, you can perhaps settle in at the elevated camp bar and watch as wildlife emerge at dusk. Viewed from above, the delta resembles the shape of a hand – with a palm that is permanently filled with water. The fingers flood seasonally, creating a blue-green wilderness of fresh water that provides an important source of life in a country that is 80 per cent arid. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 3: Explore South East Okavango Delta
After breakfast, hop aboard a short charter flight from the South Central Okavango to the newly opened Rra Dinare Camp in South East Okavango. The private camp is found on a 67,000 acre parcel of land adjacent to Moremi Game reserve on the south eastern side of the Delta. From here you can enjoy spectacular views overlooking the Gomoti River, which is known for its wealth of bird and wildlife. There will be opportunities to experience both day and night game drives, as well as a variety of water activities on the Gomoti River (such as a traditional Mokoro ride if you haven’t experience one by now). Rra Dinare Camp contains 8 tents and facilities include a swimming pool, dining area, curio shop and bar. Dinner and overnight at Rra Dinare Camp.
Day 4: Visit South East Okavango
Enjoy a second day at Rra Dinare Camp and see all that this corner of the Okavango has to offer. The south-eastern edge of the river is normally last to receive floods during the wet season and this means it becomes a popular watering hole for wildlife during the dry season. While the dry season is a great time to see wildlife in the area, the density of mopane woodlands means good game viewing can be expected all year round. Viewing favorites include elephants, buffalo, giraffe, impala, hippos, and crocodiles. As an important source of water for game, you might also spot lions, leopards and cheetahs hunting by the banks of the river. Keen bird-watchers might chance to see egrets, ibis, raptors and sunbirds thanks to the combination of wetlands, Mopane veldt and drier Acacia. Dinner and overnight same as above.
Day 5: Transfer Back to Maun.
